Day 13: He Has Given Us Everything We Need
by Josiah Whisnant
I encourage you to read this verse out loud!
“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 2 Peter 1:3-8, NIV
“Ineffective and unproductive” are probably some of the scariest words in the whole Bible. Do you ever feel that way in your walk with Jesus? I do. Most of the time I feel like I’m lacking something, and I need God to unlock the secret to life for me. I’m constantly searching for how to be a better man, friend, and son, but most times it feels like I’m extremely far away from being any of those.
I pray and I pray asking God to give me a mountain top/burning bush moment like Moses, or to meet me on the road like Paul. I expect it to be this life changing revelation or crazy lifestyle change that just happens to be really cool-something that will either make me the next Bible thumping celebrity, or sound really good in a, currently non-existent, book that I might write at some point down the road. While my motivations in these moments aren’t necessarily centered around glorifying God and being obedient to Him, God, in His ultimate goodness, is faithful to lovingly, firmly, and swiftly humble me.
More often than not, God reminds me that He has given me everything I need for a godly life, and I’m just not being obedient. It doesn’t require some Indiana Jones level expedition that makes me look cool. It will always come back to things that can only come from Him, that give HIM the glory, and point others to how awesome HE is. Not because God is some tyrannical diva, but because in Him ONLY is where our hope is found.
During this time of fasting and prayer I pray that you would know that God is fully equipping you to live a godly life at home, work, school, and everywhere in between. He has moved heaven and earth for you to know and respond to the reality that He will give you:
Prayer: “You, Lord, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands. How wonderful are your gifts to me; how good they are! I praise the Lord, because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me. I am always aware of the Lord's presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me.” – Psalm 16:5-8, GNT Lord, thank you that you are all we need; You equip us TODAY with every gifting and ability to live out our lives in devoted obedience to you as living sacrifices and walking testimonies of your goodness, grace, mercy, and holy and eternal power. Amen.
